Early Treatment for Young Children
There are several situations where early orthodontic intervention in the developing dentition is indicated. In our office, we will recommend early treatment in order to correct anterior crossbites(where the upper front teeth go behind the lower front teeth upon closing of the jaw). We will also recommend treatment for a tooth or teeth that are erupting in a poor position. This can cause trauma to the teeth or create an unsightly appearance for the child which may cause social problems. We may also recommend some type of space maintenance appliance when an important baby tooth is lost early. There are also situations where we may recommend the extraction of one or more baby teeth in order to create a more desirable eruption pattern for important permanent teeth. A removable type appliance may be used to retract upper front teeth that are protrusive("bucked") from thumb or finger sucking, and/or tongue thrusting. Protrusion of the upper front teeth can be unsightly for the child and may cause traumatic damage to these teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child see an orthodontist at approximately six to seven years of age.
We have a great deal of experience with treating orthodontic problems that develop in young children. If you recognize any of the above symptoms developing in your child, or if your family dentist recommends that you bring your child to an orthodontist, please call our office for a no charge consultation. We will be able to tell you if your child needs some type of treatment or if your child's dentition is developing within normal limits.
